Okanagan Film Commissioner Sara Shaak will be venturing out on her own when her contract with the Okanagan Film Commission expires at the end of September 2007. She will be creating a film industry consulting agency based in the region, and seeks to continue to work toward the development of the film industry in the area through her new role in the private sector. She is committed to helping the Okanagan Film Commission throughout the duration of her contract in order to ensure a smooth transition to new leadership for the organization.

“Our region is at the point where industry leaders are paying attention to us and considering substantial investments that will secure our viability as a film centre. I am looking forward to playing a part in promoting the attributes of the Okanagan for further industry development,” explains Shaak.

Sara Shaak has been the region’s Film Commissioner for the past five years and during her tenure, the Okanagan has experienced tremendous growth. Production activity has grown from $250 thousand dollars in 2001 to $5.5 million in 2006, and production days in the region have increased 1000% within the same time frame. With the recent release of the Okanagan Sound Stage Development study, the region has also seen significant interest for investments in studio infrastructure and there are many more growth opportunities to come within this exciting sector.

The Okanagan Film Commission’s mandate is to generate a positive economic impact by enabling the growth of the Okanagan-Similkameen-Boundary region as a film centre. The Okanagan Film Commission currently receives financial support with partnership contributions from the regional districts within the Okanagan Valley, and the Province of BC, through a contract administered by the BC Film Commission.
